Slot Advantage Play Glossary

A reference guide to the language used across APWebsite. Definitions describe concepts—not automatic proof that a machine is favorable or profitable.

Slot Advantage Play Glossary general guide cover
Use this glossary carefully: the same marketing term can describe different features across manufacturers and game versions. The exact help screen and observable behavior remain authoritative for the machine being evaluated.

A

Advantage play (AP)
Using observable information, documented rules and disciplined evaluation to identify a potentially favorable decision. It does not mean guaranteed profit.
Active state
A feature component currently operating, such as a Wild reel with spins remaining or a limited-duration capture window.
Average feature value
The long-run mean value of a feature across its possible outcomes. It is not the maximum displayed award.

B

Bankroll
Money deliberately allocated to withstand the costs and variance of play, separate from ordinary living expenses.
Bet level
The selected bet option. Bet level can affect feature eligibility, jackpot access, displayed state and cost.
Bounded meter
A meter with a published upper limit or forced event boundary. A bounded event is not automatically a profitable event.

C

Machine
The physical machine and installed game machine setup. Similar titles on different machines may use different rules.
Collector
A visible component that accumulates qualifying symbols, values or events toward an award or feature.
Machine setup
The installed combination of software version, paytable, denomination, bet options, jackpot structure and optional features.
Contribution rate
The rate at which bets or qualifying events add to a meter or progressive. It may be unknown even when the meter is visible.

D

Denomination
The base credit value selected for play. Changing denomination can alter cost, prize values, paytables or stored state.
Drawdown
A decline from a bankroll's previous high point. Positive expected value does not prevent substantial drawdowns.

E

Entry point
A state at which supported expected value, cost and risk assumptions justify playing under a defined strategy.
Expected value (EV)
The probability-weighted average result over many repetitions. A positive estimate does not guarantee that one session will win.
Exposure
The money, time or number of paid events at risk before the opportunity resolves or is abandoned.

F

Feature value
The expected value of a bonus, jackpot path, Wild state or other award mechanism after accounting for its possible outcomes.
Finite cycle
A sequence with a known number of remaining events, such as spins left in an active state.

H

Help screen
The machine's rules, information or paytable menu. It can document eligibility and behavior but may omit probabilities and exact entry points.
Hold & Spin
A feature framework in which landed prize symbols remain while a limited spin counter continues or resets. The term alone does not imply persistent pre-feature value.

J

Jackpot eligibility
The bet, denomination, feature or symbol conditions required for a displayed jackpot to be available.
Linked progressive
A jackpot funded or offered across multiple machines or positions. The displayed amount may be shared even when local feature progress is not.

M

Meter
A numerical or graphical display of value, progress or status. A meter must be tied to a verified rule before it can be evaluated.
Must-hit-by
A progressive or feature guaranteed to award by a stated upper limit. The boundary does not by itself establish positive EV.

P

Perceived persistence
A display that looks saved or developed without sufficient evidence that it changes future value or trigger probability.
Persistent state
Information or feature progress that survives spins, sessions or players and can affect future outcomes or value.
Play-or-pass decision
The structured choice to play, continue watching or decline based on state, cost, value, risk and uncertainty.
Progressive
An award value that increases under defined rules until won and reset. A high progressive is not automatically favorable.

R

Reset
The state to which a meter, collector, jackpot or feature returns after an award or other event.
Reset region
A range of possible starting values rather than one fixed reset amount.
Risk of ruin
The probability that losses exhaust the allocated bankroll before long-run advantage can be realized.
RTP
Return to player: the theoretical long-run percentage returned under a defined paytable and strategy, not a promise for a session.

S

Scouting
Systematically checking machines and recording relevant states before deciding whether further evaluation is warranted.
State ownership
Which game, bet, denomination, machine, linked bank or player session controls a visible state.
Stored value
Displayed prize or feature value retained inside a persistent component. It may still require a qualifying event to award.

V

Variance
The degree to which actual results can spread around expected value. Higher variance produces larger and less predictable swings.
Visible state
Any observable meter, collector, reel position, counter, stored prize or feature condition. Visibility alone does not establish value.

W

Bet eligibility
The minimum or specific bet required for a feature, jackpot or displayed state to apply.
Watch state
A condition worth documenting or monitoring but not supported strongly enough for an immediate play decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does persistent state mean a machine is profitable?

No. Persistence identifies information that carries forward; cost, probability, value and risk still determine the decision.

Is a full-looking pot a meter?

It may be a visual indicator, but its mathematical meaning must be verified before it is treated as useful progress.

Does must-hit-by mean guaranteed profit?

No. The event must occur by the limit, but the cost and award can still produce an unfavorable result.

Why can the same term mean different things?

Manufacturers and game families use marketing language differently, so the exact title, machine setup and help screen matter.
